Greta Thunberg Deported From Israel After Gaza Aid Flotilla Interception |
As of October 7, 2025, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has made headlines following her deportation from Israel, where she was detained as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The flotilla, consisting of 42 boats carrying over 470
activists from various countries, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in
international waters on Friday. Israel described the mission as a "publicity
stunt" carrying minimal aid, only two tons, while the activists aimed to
challenge what they call Israel's "illegal siege" on Gaza.
Israel deported Thunberg along with 170 other
pro-Palestinian activists on Monday, with flights landing in Athens, Greece,
and Slovakia. Of the 479 participants, 341 have been expelled so far, while 138
remain in detention, including some on hunger strike.
Activists reported harsh treatment during their brief
imprisonment, including beatings, blindfolding, and overcrowded cells with
bedbugs and limited food and water. One Spanish activist claimed they were
"dragged along the ground" and placed in cages, while
French-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan alleged being assaulted by police.
Israel's Foreign Ministry dismissed these as "fake
news," insisting all legal rights were upheld and citing an incident where
a detainee bit a medical worker.
The flotilla departed from Barcelona in early September amid UN warnings of famine in Gaza, where at least 460 Palestinians have died from malnutrition since the war began in October 2023, according to Gaza's health ministry.
